Terrordrome: Vehement convulsion

04/11/10  ||  The Duff

I started my affiliation with Grindethic with Defeated Sanity’s “Psalms of the Moribund”, following up with Infected Disarray’s “Inhuman Grotesqueries” a year or so on down the line; yup, brutal death ain’t my thing, but when I hear “limited to one hundred copies” my legs spread and my labia become engorged (I… I’m actually a man), prompting me to purchase the Terrordrome split with Oath to Vanquish released earlier this year. Then excitement overtook sense of judgment making me buy more of such from the label’s roster, only to discover from the split that Terrordome aren’t exactly brutal death metal. I rated the split fairly highly, but in discovering “Vehement Convulsion”, the material comparatively is disappointing; this is the brutal death I was looking for in purchasing “Begetters of Fear and Ruin”, more close and uncomfortable, more filled out, and unsurprisingly, due to the less progressive nature of the music, more consistent.

This here is definitely Terrordrome’s comfort zone, allowing them to compete far more convincingly with the likes of Infected Disarray and other Disgorge/Suffocation/Deeds of Flesh worshipers (the enormous production certainly more fitting to their destructive ensemble for starters), yet the tech is still an important element to their sound. It’s simply that such composition is far more efficiently integrated (sweeps akin to Origin but executed even further off the cuff, yet never in an obnoxious manner as was the case with the split). Whereas Infected Disarray are heavy, technical but otherwise quite open relative to their idols, reliant on a modest amount of catchiness to bust tha impact, Terrordrome adopt the musical barrage approach, using blisteringly incessant musicianship as their tools of trade. Breakdowns and occasional groove will make an appearance, but overall the music rarely strikes to uppermost memorability (although the opening riff to “No Oral Hesitations” is killer).

This is what we ask for – the riffs run-on well from each other, the songs feel as though they’ve been worked on from a riff to riff perspective and not simply jumbled together in a “what works best” conduct, but it is nonetheless still a string of ideas mentality, no repeating themes; it works as always for the shear inanity of it all, the excess, but repeated sittings will be in order before things settle, and break-up prog rock/electro ambient periods suggested as complementary. Terrordrome aren’t the most proficient or varied (this their first full-length and oh I dunno NO ONE ABLE TO KNOCK SUFFOCATION THE AMSTERS FROM THEIR THRONE?!?), but the musicianship is nigh on flawlessly executed, and the death metal of very high quality. It’ll be tough discerning the music on a track-to-track basis (a riff or two will jut out to help identify on the occasion, but eleven short and swift cuts is an undertaking provided the music’s full-on, no expenses spared nature), but these talented Greeks have given it a most honest attempt in crafting something of high value in a cluttered and often sterile sub-genre, even if it may not stand the test of time.
